Emergency Help

Draft — pending clinical review. This page describes general information about treatment and has not yet been reviewed by a clinician. It should not be relied on as medical advice. For urgent help, call 0333-5556427.

If you are dealing with an emergency right now, call the centre on 0333-5556427. Admission is available 24 hours a day.

Situations that are medical emergencies

Treat the following as emergencies requiring immediate help rather than a scheduled appointment:

  • Suspected overdose, or someone who cannot be roused
  • A seizure, particularly during alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal
  • Confusion, severe agitation or hallucinations during withdrawal
  • Chest pain, difficulty breathing, or a serious injury
  • Active suicidal intent, or a suicide attempt
  • Immediate risk of serious harm to another person

If someone is threatening suicide

Do not leave them alone, remove access to means of harm where it is safe to do so, and get medical help immediately. Take the statement seriously even if it has been made before and nothing happened — previous statements do not reduce risk.

Withdrawal that has already started

If someone has stopped drinking or stopped benzodiazepines and is showing tremor, sweating, severe agitation or confusion, this needs medical attention rather than waiting. These are the withdrawals that carry a genuine risk of seizures.
